FREE Fall Risk Assessments and talk on "How Your Body Balances" at Cudahy Kelly Senior Center

April 19, 2013

FREE Fall Risk Assessments and Balance Education

A Presentation from Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers in conjunction with The Kelly Senior Center

One out of three adults age 65 and older falls each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2012). Even more frightening is the fact that among older adults (those 65 or older), falls are the leading cause of injury and death (CDC, 2012). Are you at risk? Often times is it as failure of your body to coordinate all the sensations and input from your eyes, inner ear, and your joints and muscles. In addition, weakness, medication side effects, environmental risks in the home, and poor decision making are also at fault. Several of these factors are preventable with good use of your medical professionals.

Allie Dorszynski is a Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Accelerated Rehab in South Milwaukee, WI. Allie will provide a Free Balance Lecture and Q&A session on how your body uses it's senses to balance. This takes place on May 15th, 2013 from 12:30-1:30 pm at the Kelly Senior Center in Cudahy. “Here you will receive a clear understanding of what leads to poor balance and ensure you are doing all you can to be safe in and out of your home” says Allie. Along with this talk a safety check list will be provided to make immediate improvements with your safety and health in the home.

In addition, she is providing FREE 15 min Fall Risk Assessments following the talk on May 15th from 1:30 to 2:30 pm at the Kelly Senior Center. A second screening will take place on May 17th from 10am to noon. During the screen your strength, flexibility, and balance is tested to ensure you don't place yourself at risk for falling. Your results are given back immediately! “Good use of personalized physical therapy to re-train your balance system and manage your strength and flexibility is directly linked to a decreased fall risk”, says Allie of the benefits of physical therapy.

Please sign up for a screen ahead of time with Jane at the Kelly Senior Center (414) 481-9611.

Allie practices at Accelerated Rehabilitation Center in South Milwaukee and treats a variety of problems from neck, back, arm and leg pain, to dizziness, and rehabilitation after surgery. Allie is a graduate of the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program of UW-Milwaukee and is eager to further meet the needs of the surrounding community. If you cannot attend the screenings at these times please contact the Accelerated Rehabilitation Center to schedule a free balance screening at the clinic.
