SOUTH MILWAUKEE (Sept.29, 2010) – The South Milwaukee Downtown Market is adding a week to its schedule – and, in doing so, celebrating autumn, and the market’s first-class vendor lineup.
The first-ever South Milwaukee Downtown Market Fall Festival has been scheduled for 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, at the market’s normal site on 11 and Milwaukee Avenues. Besides the usual lineup of produce, organics, arts, crafts and food vendors, the event will also feature children’s activities like pumpkin carving and apple bobbing – all creatively using products from market vendors, of course.
Market officials are also thanking their vendors by offering the extra week free of charge, a savings of $20 from the weekly rate.
“The community has really rallied behind the market, and we couldn’t have done it without our vendors,” South Milwaukee Downtown Market Chairman Bob Pfeiffer said. “We wanted to find a way to thank them, and this is a great way to do it, while at the same time giving our customers a unique special event to end the 2010 season.”
Of course, the market continues every Thursday through the Fall Festival.
In all, it will be a 21-week run in year two of the Downtown Market, which debuted in July of 2009. The 2010 season has been one of rapid growth, with more than 50 vendors and hundreds of customers typically packing the market each week this year.
A number of site improvements have been among the changes in 2010. These included expansion into a nearby Bucyrus parking lot and the addition of electricity and a seating area with picnic tables donated by a local Eagle Scout. A permanent Downtown Market sign, also donated by a local Eagle Scout, was added to the site this month.
The market also made a commitment to bring live music to the market every week this year, and a number of acts have taken part.
“This has truly become a community gathering spot, a place for residents from all around the area to come every week and enjoy a night out,” Bob said. “And that’s a critical part of our mission – to draw people to downtown South Milwaukee.”

Christmas Market Planned
While the Fall Festival marks the official end of the 21-week summer market, a Christmas Market has also been planned for Saturday, Dec. 4., inside the historic Heritage Building at Bucyrus International. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the same as those of the Bucyrus History Museum under the same roof.
More than 50 vendors are expected, including many of the regulars from the summer market offering holiday gift ideas, food and fun.
Christmas music is planned throughout the day.
Vendor applications are now being accepted for the market. Visit the South Milwaukee Downtown Market website for more information.
“Christmas is a great time to be in South Milwaukee, and this is another great holiday event in our city,” said Erik Brooks, market co-founder and Fourth District alderman. “We had such a great turnout for our indoor Spring Market in April, and this will only build on that and build on the momentum from our strong summer season.”
