College Avenue ramps and park-and-ride lots closed

May 28, 2009 4:44 p.m. | The College Avenue ramps to and from Interstate 94 and park-and-ride lots have closed so the entire College Avenue interchange can be rebuilt.

The northeast park-and-ride lot is scheduled to reopen in late August while the southeast lot and the interchange ramps are scheduled to reopen in November, according to estimates by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

During the lot closures from May 22 to late August, a temporary park-and-ride lot will be available for public use at MATC's parking lot B, the DOT said in a press release. That lot will be accessible off of Howell Avenue between College and Rawson.

Also, the Layton Avenue and Rawson Avenue interchange ramps will be open as alternates during the College Avenue ramp closures.

All scheduled closures are weather dependent, and the DOT is urging drivers to be patient as the project proceeds.

Big effort at the line allows Shorewood boys to win on senior night, 60-53

By Steven L. Tietz

Feb. 24, 2010 9:53 p.m. | With the numbers of upperclassmen Erik Berg, Chase Miller and Cameron Hood suspended over the Shorewood bench on senior and parents' night, the Greyhounds' boys basketball team relied on the foul line and freshmen Austin Mitchell-Malone (16 points), Alex Najieb (14) and Donovan Freeman to pull out a tense 60-53 win over St. Francis on Wednesday.

Shorewood hit its first 18 free throws of the game and its last seven in going 25 of 29 from the charity stripe on a night that the two teams both wore orange warm-ups to commemorate Wauwatosa West coach Mike Landisch, who is battling cancer.

Through a 50/50 raffle and other endeavors, about $500 was raised for the Landsich Fund said a Shorewood school official.

Greyhound coach John Hoch was happy on all fronts.

"It's funny," Hoch said. "This is my fifth year of coaching and by far my youngest team, but it's also my best foul shooting team. We're second in the Woodland (Conference) at 67 percent. Not bad for a team with four freshmen and a sophomore playing prominent roles."

By Tom Kertscher of the Journal Sentinel

Jan. 11, 2010 4:14 p.m. | Cudahy — A group representing the mayors and village presidents of Milwaukee County's 19 municipalities recommended Monday that each community hold trick-or-treat on the same day - usually a Sunday.

The resolution is aimed at keeping children safe and deterring groups of kids from collecting candy outside their own communities.

The recommendation is not binding on any city or village.

Under the resolution, trick-or-treat would be held from 1 to 4 p.m. the Sunday on or before Oct. 31. When Oct 31 falls on a Saturday, trick-or-treat would be held that day.

The resolution is for 10 years.

By Thomas Content of the Journal Sentinel

Dec. 18, 2009 4:40 p.m. | One-third of the hourly workers laid off by Ladish Co. this summer will return to work in mid-January.

The Cudahy manufacturer is bringing back 27 union blacksmiths, said Chief Financial Officer Wayne Larsen. The company laid off about 75 people in July.

"Business has bounced back a little, and we're encouraged with what the demand looks like in the first quarter, so we're bringing some people back," he said.

Ladish makes forgings for jet engines and the aerospace and industrial markets.

Through the first nine months of the year, Ladish reported sales of $266.6 million, down 25% from the same period in 2008.

Airport promotion group seeks to become non-profit corporation

By Tom Kertscher of the Journal Sentinel

Dec. 14, 2009 12:00 p.m. | The Airport Area Economic Development Task Force, a consortium of government and private-sector representatives that promotes Mitchell International Airport as an economic development catalyst, is proposing to become a non-profit corporation.

The new organization, which would be called the Milwaukee Gateway Aerotropolis Corp., would be better able to promote the airport, according to information being circulated among local governments.

The local governments are being asked to support the creation of the organization. On Tuesday, a resolution detailing the proposal will be considered by the Oak Creek Common Council.

The resolution says the task force has been meeting for two years and includes elected officials and staff from Oak Creek, Cudahy, Franklin, Greendale, Greenfield, Milwaukee, St. Francis and South Milwaukee, as well as from the airport, Milwaukee County, the Port of Milwaukee, and the state and federal governments.

The Airport Gateway Business Association, the South Suburban Chamber of Commerce, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Association of Commerce, the Greater Milwaukee Committee, Spirit of Milwaukee and VISIT Milwaukee also have been participating in the task force, according to the resolution.

Residents have another shot at getting swine flu vaccine

By MARK SCHAAF

Nov. 05, 2009 3:50 p.m. | Another H1N1 flu vaccine clinic will be held next week in Oak Creek.

The clinic, in conjunction with the Oak Creek-Franklin School District and the cities of St. Francis and South Milwaukee, is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at Oak Creek High School, 340 E. Puetz Road.

Though the clinic is open to any resident, only those people in certain target groups will be vaccinated, Health Officer Judy Price said. The current target group consists of pregnant women, health care and emergency response workers, household contacts and caregivers of children younger than 6 months old, children age 6 months to 4 years old and children 5 to 18 years old with medical conditions.

The Oak Creek Health Department at an Oct. 28 clinic gave more than 300 vaccines, Price said. But unlike other area health departments, such as Greenfield, the vaccine supply did not run out.

Vikings move closer to playoffs with shutout

By Brian Brunner

Oct. 10, 2009 9:00 a.m. |

For much of the 2009 season New Berlin West has used the arm of standout junior quarterback Dominique Bledsoe to set up its running game.

Junior running back Steve Vogl and the Vikings' offensive line had other ideas Friday night in their convincing 28-0 win over visiting St. Francis.

The wet, muddy conditions limited the Viking passing attack and allowed Vogl to carry the ball 30 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns.

"(Vogl) continues to amaze me," New Berlin West coach Jeff Grabo. "He ran like a man tonight."
