Is a 100,000 sq ft or larger zoning ordinance coming to Cudahy? Part 1

Cudahy, Leadership, Development, Wal-Mart

I have not been told that such an ordinance is currently in the minds of the city officials of Cudahy or on any agendas, but have heard whispers of one being considered.  This is a surefire way to keep Wal-Mart out.

Debbie Branger & Family to offer Grant Park Concessions

There is lots of exciting news to report this week. First, Debbie Branger and her family will be operating the concessions stand at Grant Park Beach in South Milwaukee. This is a beautiful sandy beach and offers a great opportunity to swim in Lake Michigan or just hang out and get a nice tan. The concessions will be open Monday - Friday from 3:30 to 8 pm and Saturday - Sunday from noon to 8 pm. What  a fun time!

And speaking of fun, mark your calendar for Thursday, July 23rd for South Milwaukee's "Evening on the Avenue". The event is centered around the area of Milwaukee Ave and 10th Avenue and runs from 4 to 9 pm. The Friends of Mill Pond will be selling Duck Race Tickets. There will be music, entertainment, children's activities and food. And for those who have contacted me asking for more info on our local Garlic Mustard Pickers -- this band will be playing some fine Celtic Music at this event! I know I will not want to miss it.

Happy Independence Day!

Holiday

As you enjoy this day with family or friends, cookouts, camping, fireworks, parades and the like, please find the time to reflect on the reason we celebrate this day.  We are a proud nation, one where we can express our different thoughts and views, one where we can have religious freedom, one where our soldiers continue to fight for the Freedom we enjoy, one where we take a day out of the year to celebrate a birthday, not “just another year”, one birthday that will continue to be another year to celebrate our freedom, one where we can be thankful for the Freedom we enjoy!

July 4th Kudos to Those Who Care

Grant Park, kiddie parades, races, Fire Department, Police Department, Parks & Rec Department, budget cuts, Friends of Grant Park, Friends of Mill Pond, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts

Kiddie bike and costume parades, wheelbarrow and shoe scramble races, ice cream and Cracker Jacks, bouncy games, brats and beer, and live music.

The annual South Milwaukee Fourth of July fun at Grant Park went off as successfully usual, thanks to the South Milwaukee Parks & Rec Department, Fire and Police departments, volunteers with numerous organizations, including Friends of Grant Park, Friends of Mill Pond, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. But no thanks to the County of Milwaukee. Yet another victim of County budget cuts.

A Bridge Too Far-Fetched

I didn’t know Milwaukee had so much money! So much, in fact, it’s like those mega-rich folks who do or buy things without ever looking at the price tag.

That’s what seems to be going on with the resurrected idea to remove/replace the Daniel Hoan Memorial Bridge with a neo-drawbridge.

E.W. Luther to be Principaled or Not -- Meeting Tonight

EW Luther, school board, principal, math aide

EW Luther parents and supporters are feeling a little whiplashed.

"One minute we are being told we won't get a principal, and one minute we are being told we will," says one. "One second it's 'Luther will NEVER close" the next it's "well, we need to discuss it'."

That and worry over Luther losing other staff, like the K-2nd grade math aide has been the subject of a flurry of emails entreating Luther supporters to attend tonight's School Board meeting.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 pm in the District Office on 15th Street (adjacent to the PAC)...enter through Door 8 or Door 9 (http://www.sdsm.k12.wi.us/SchoolBoard/BoardCalendar/).

An Event in Cudahy

Judges, high-profle trial, Cudahy, Cudahy Family Library, Anatomy of a Trial

Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes of a high-profile trial? Do you know how that affects you?

I'll be talking about that and how the news media shape people's opinions and affect access to the courts on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Cudahy Family Library. My comments will be based on my recently published book Anatomy of a Trial, which is based on myths and distortions of the 1995 Simpson trial that became cemented as fact in the American psyche, and the fallout that continues to this day.
