I received a phone call and message in my voice mailbox that stated the following:
Parkland for Sale?
I hope everyone had a chance to read the article "Sales of County Parkland Suggested" in Tuesday's paper. In case you missed it, here is the link: http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/80633172.html
You all know by now how I feel about this idea! The idea of selling County Parkland was simply suggested in an audit report and is not, as far as I know, being seriously considered by the County Board. This would be my worst nightmare if it were to become a reality.
Supporting Local Businesses
Ida and Tom Spack got a nice Christmas present -- their Nona's Cafe on Chicago just north of the Post Office was featured in The Business Journal on Christmas Day. The Spack's have been weathering the recession thanks to lots of business from South Milwaukeeans. Go Ida and Tom!
Now if The Business Journal would do a feature on the Madison Avenue Market., on Madison just east of Chicago. Thanks to this great new deli and bakery, we enjoyed delicious spinach, meat and tomato byreks and scrumptous baklava during the holidays.

It would appear that a reader was right that you could not campaign (including getting signatures to be on the ballot) on federal property like the Cudahy U.S. Post Office.

A Partial Solution to our Health-Care Crisis
I have made a New Year's Resolution to keep my mind active by reading one book per month starting in Dec. 2009. In December I read "The End of Food" by Paul Roberts and in January I read "The End of Oil" by the same author. I checked out both books from the Cudahy Family Library. ( I strongly recommend both of these books).
In one section, Roberts talks about what he calls "Hidden Economic Costs'. For example, consider the cost of burning coal in coal-fired power plants. Coal is actually a very dirty fuel and produces massive amounts of pollution. Economists and power company executives will consider many factors when trying to determine the cost of using coal to produce electric power. The cost of purchasing the coal is an obvious cost. Other costs include the amortized cost of building the power plant, labor and production costs, plant maintenance, pollution abatement, etc etc etc.

South Milwaukee children's author Janet Halfmann is blazing the kudos trail. She recently posted on Twitter that her book, Little Skink's Tail, was chosen the Best Children's Book of 2009 by Tif Talks Books: http://www.tiftalksbooks.com/2010/01/best-of-2009.html. And the most recent issue of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) Bulletin says her non-fiction picture book, Seven Miles to Freedom: The Robert Smalls Story, has been selected for the Missouri State Teachers Association Reading Circle Program, and her fiction picture book, Little Skink's Tail, was placed on the Florida Recommended Reading List. Kudos, Janet! South Milwaukee is proud of you and happy for you.
