Today's Autism Information - Genetic Mutations
Autism Linked to Dozens of Genetic Mutations
60 teams of experts spanning a dozen countries have discovered dozens of genetic mutations in a study involving over 1,000 autistic children, bringing a test for the disorder a step closer to reality that would do a better job at earlier detection.
"Just knowing about these genetic changes can help the families involved come to terms with why their child has autism, but it can also be important where there are siblings too in determining future risk," said Professor Tony Monaco.
The study is part of the larger Autism Genome Project, which has so far identified entire chunks of DNA which affected children lack or have duplicates of. "Rogue" genes involved with brain development were also more commonly found in autistics.
