Sprint Reveals 8 Million GPS Requests from Law Enforcement

In the past year alone, various law enforcement agencies have requested GPS data for over 8 million customers of Sprint/Nextel, according to Chris Soghoian, a technical consultant for the Federal Trade Commission's privacy protection office.

It's unknown how many requests other major telcos have received, but Sprint's example raises questions of policy, accountability and privacy for all Americans.

In a response from Sprint, the figure of 8 million was construed to make up attempts to track individuals using an automated system designed by the telco specifically for law enforcement access, rather than 8 million separate individuals.
