More Sales Taxes Coming

Also Tuesday, state Rep. Christine Sinicki (D-Milwaukee) said she was introducing legislation to authorize the county to increase its sales tax by up to 0.5% to pay for parks, recreation and culture. That would raise an estimated $65 million a year. It would serve as companion legislation to a separate bill to increase the county sales tax by another 0.5% to pay for transit.
If both passed, that would match what voters approved in an advisory referendum in November, Sinicki said. Gov. Jim Doyle has said he would support the 0.5% sales tax for transit but has not said whether he would sign into law a county sales tax increase for parks.
Under the two measures, the county's sales tax would increase from the current 0.5% to 1.5% and generate about $130 million more a year for the county.
