Dear Mayor McCue
I am writing you today to ask questions about the Fall/Winter 2009 Cudahy Newsletter. I have some concerns about how this newsletter is prepared before it is sent out to
1. With today’s economy and city budget shortfalls, why was the newsletter printed in color when a black and white version would have been cheaper, thus allowing the saved money to be used elsewhere or saved for the next newsletter? Was there a cost analysis completed on color vs. black and white? If so, could you tell me what those numbers were? Was a decision made to just print in color because that is how it has always been done?
This could have been an easy cost savings opportunity as there is nothing in the newsletter that needs color to increase people’s understanding of the articles.
2. Does anyone proofread the newsletter before it is printed? If someone does do this, is it an individual that works for the city or is this outsourced? If it is a city employee could you please tell me who/what department this individual works in? If it is outsourced can you tell me what company does this work?
Here is a list of errors in the newsletter:
A. “GENERALTIONS OF PRIDE”, located on the cover page. It should be Generations. Generaltions is not a word in the English dictionary. It’s pretty embarrassing that the city motto/slogan is misspelled.
B. The City of
C. to cover the cost of extending
D. Preparing the 2010 operating budget is going to be a tough, located on page 2. Going to be a tough what? Decision process? Time? Time on the taxpayers? Maybe the was extra, I know but I’m hoping you can tell me.
E. From the $32.6 million dollars of proposed, located on page 5. When using a $, the word dollars does not need to be spelled out. It should be either $32.6 million worth or 32.6 million dollars worth.
F. of City Hall next To the northern, located on page 9 near the bottom. The “T” should be a “t”.
G. GRASS CLIPPIINGS/YARD WASTE, located on page 14. It should be Clippings.
H. please wait for your renewal notice in the male, located on page 20. It should be notice in the mail.
I. Winter is coming and with is comes a rash located on page 21. It should be and with it comes a rash.
J. is already as cold as 33 degrees, located on page 21. Temperatures should state either C (Celsius) or F (Fahrenheit) to describe the temperature scale being used. Not everyone uses F (Fahrenheit) for temperatures some people do use C (Celsius).
K. Some telephone numbers listed in the newsletter have the area code (414) before them and others do not. You should include the area code when listing phone numbers as not everyone knows it is a 414 or even has a 414 phone number.
3. If the proofreading was outsourced, will there be an attempt to get a refund based on the poor quality of work? If the proofreading was internal, will the individual be disciplined on the poor quality of work?
Now some of these things may seem minor but this newsletter comes from the “City of
