General Motor's Chevrolet ready to reenter police car market after 13 years

General Motors has made it official: it's seriously reentering the market for big rear-wheel-drive police cars for the first time since 1996.  The all-new Chevrolet Caprice police car will report for duty starting in 2011.  The timing could be pitch perfect. Ford's Crown Victoria, which dominates police fleets, will stop production at about the same time and Chrysler's Dodge Charger police car hasn't ever made big inroads into the market.

GM says the Caprice police car, built on one of its Australian rear-wheel drive platforms, has been specifically adapted for police duty.  The cars will have high-output alternators to handle the lights and radio and heavy-duty suspension and components.  Caprice won't be sold in a civilian version.  Caprice will have a monster six-liter V-8 engine.  For fuel savings, there will be an optional V-6 by 2012.

The new cruiser will have seats especially designed for long hours of patrol, plus modeled in such a way as to be comfortable for officers who carry a lot of equipment on their gun belts.  The car is also designed to make sure air bags don't interfere with computers and other police gear in the car.
