Web tool aiding families with autistic children
The free online service enables families to gather and track data about treatments in a systematic way, using ChARMtracker, a tool created by Palo Alto-based MedicalMine. Some 400 families worldwide have been using ChARMtracker to keep daily records of treatment regimens that influence their autistic child’s behavior.
"ChARM takes advantage of internet-based technology that can be accessed ubiquitously by caregivers to record and analyze detailed and complete treatment information on a frequent basis, from the convenience of their home," says Nelson.
The online service lets parents import lab results and record progress in customized educational programs. It automatically generates reports and medical charts for doctors, therapists, teachers and caregivers.
“Technology is a crucial piece to help us solve the puzzle of autism,” says Vembu. “ChARM is positioned to help physicians and researchers finally understand what we can do to treat our children successfully as well as to prevent new cases. That’s never been possible before.”
