Why Not

First Job Experience with Supported Employment & DVR

As I wrote about in July, we have started the pursuit of community based employment for my son Tyler. This summer he completed his paperwork, signing his W4 and I9 forms just like the rest of us.  The supported employment agency observed Tyler while he was at camp this summer to get an idea of his strengths and areas he needs to improve upon. The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) even called us to check to see how the progress was going.

Well, this week he is tentatively schedule to begin his first, on the job work experience.  He is starting out working in an office. I’m not sure what those job duties will be, but I am sure that it is something that Tyler can do once he learns the proper way to complete the task.  Very rarely do any of use walk into a job and master it from the time we punch in, there are those learning curves.

It is the belief in Tyler that I know he will succeed.  I know that Tyler has the same high expectations of his own abilities as his parents, sister, brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends have in him. 

These experiences with DVR are part of Tyler’s public school education, it is something that is required that the public school offers.  Few voucher schools even offer transition programs.  If community based employment is something that you believe strongly in for your son or daughter, then you need to ask if your school offers a transition program.  If they do not and you are part of the voucher program, whether the regular school voucher or the proposed special needs voucher, you need to ask your school, why they are not offering this great opportunity.  If you are thinking of applying for a voucher, I encourage you to make this one of your top questions, is there a transition program in place and how knowledgeable are you in working with DVR on community based employment.
