Why Not

I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.

CMS Issues Rule Supporting HHS Community Living Initiative

After months of hard work by many advocates across the country, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid released their final rule in regards to their support of the Department of Health and Human Services Community Living Initiative to strengthen community living options for older Americans and persons with disabilities.

As I have written before, the focus of this rule is to make community living and employment options the first choice, not a distant second or even last in many cases.  This is exciting news for me, my son, and the rest of my family as well as the many advocates that I have worked with on this subject.  This is not something that is accomplished by one or two groups of advocates but by hundreds, if not thousands across the country.  We have the support of Rep. Gwen Moore on this topic.   I’m sure there are other Legislators who also shared their support.

The Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities has a press release on the news.

When I received the news late last week, there is that rush of knowing that a father and son made a difference. No matter how large or how small of an impact we had, we still had input in the final decision. We didn't sit back and hope that the thr ruling would be on the side we supported. We made our voice heard. Advocates across the country should be proud of themselves.

The next time that there is an issue that has an impact on your life, don't just sit back and hope it goes your way.  Get out there and talk with the people who have the ability to create that change you want to see. You won't regret it.
