Goodnight everyone, and have a legacy weekend!

ELVIS

"Whatever I will become will be what God has chosen for me."

Elvis Presley

It's Friday night. Time to unwind with our regular Friday night feature on This Just In.

The weekend has finally arrived.

The sun has set.

The evening sky has erupted.

Let's smooth our way into Saturday and Sunday.

The King of Rock and Roll would have been 79 this past Wednesday.

Tonight, some examples of how the memory of Elvis lives on.

We begin with a remix of his very first #1 hit with RCA.

Of course Elvis did all kinds of music: rock and roll, country, gospel, rhythm and blues, the blues. And his style lent itself to special projects.

I wonder what Elvis would think about a jazz pianist like Beegie Adair putting her touch on one of his classics.

Elvis never forgot his country roots. To this day, a young artist will pay tribute at the legendary Grand Ole Opry.

Elvis’ favorite music was gospel. His dream as a youngster was to sing in a gospel quartet. Even after striking it big, Elvis insisted on singing a gospel song on the Ed Sullivan show, and battled with RCA to record an all-gospel album, a fight he would win.

Elvis made gospel cool. Today, gospel shows are a huge favorite on television and in large concert halls. The Gaither Vocal Band performs one of Elvis’ gospel recordings that was the title of one of his albums. He didn’t do it first, but he put it on the wider, acceptable map.

That’s it for this week’s segment.

Goodnight.

Sleep well.

Have a great weekend.

Before we close, a quick clip from an Elvis movie.

The two lovely ladies in that clip in order of appearance were Elsa Cardenas and Ursula Andress.

An adaptation of Bossa Nova Baby was included in a Cirque du Soleil production, “Viva Elvis.” That particular show has been replaced. And there are fewer Elvis impersonators roaming around Las Vegas leading some to suggest Elvis’ legacy is starting to lose its luster.

“The number of Elvis impersonators or Google searches for ‘Elvis impersonator’ aren’t reflective of interest in Elvis,” said Gary Hahn, EPE (Elvis Presley Enterprises) vice president of marketing and media. “Our business, here at Graceland and around the world, is thriving.”

The private company does not make Graceland attendance statistics public, but the EPE website states that “Graceland welcomes over 600,000 visitors each year.”

Remember, ELVIS is an anagram for
LIVES.
