Cudahymom01 – Why would local agencies want to help businesses?
Retailers getting a helping hand
Symposium will be the first step in support system for local businesses
Sensing that Milwaukee-area retailers could use some support, a group of local agencies has called together business owners Wednesday night to ask what kind of help they need - the first step in what organizers say could become a new network aimed at strengthen retailing here.
In a meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Milwaukee, attendees of the Greater Milwaukee Retail Symposium will be asked to prioritize information and training they could use to bolster their business, from how to use social media to attract customers to how to hire good employees.
Once they know what retailers are seeking most, organizers plan over the next couple of months to put on reduced-cost seminars or workshops addressing those issues.
While the Milwaukee area has efforts to help other industries, retailing is "just sort of left behind," said Lyn Falk, owner of the consulting firm Retailworks Inc. in Mequon.
"Why can't we make retail more of a destination in Milwaukee?” Falk said
With that question in mind, Falk met with leaders of four organizations that have an interest in seeing Milwaukee-area retailing succeed and grow: the Downtown Milwaukee Business Improvement District, Local First, Visit Milwaukee and the Wisconsin Women's Business Initiative Corp., or WWBIC. The group conducted a preliminary online survey of retailers in November and found interest in issues such as social media marketing, branding, how to display merchandise and improving customer service.
