New Kid's View

Family lured Jerrianne and her husband to South Milwaukee in 2002 from Southern California where she worked as, first, a journalist, then, as a court information officer. She now stays busy with media-relations consulting, playing with her three grandchildren (part of the lure), writing, discovering her new environs, and hoping her garden will produce before the first fall frost.

Great Day (Dane) at the Market

South Milwaukee Downtown Public Market, ChopArt, Chapen Hayslett

Oh, ye poor South Milwaukee neighbors who didn't get to South Milwaukee Downtown Public Market's opening day yesterday. Weather was near perfect. South Milwaukeeans and folks from neighboring cities and communities turned out -- many with their pets. (See photos below.) Live music. Fifty vendors selling everything from baked goodies to veggie garden starter plants, flowers for border gardens, honey, handmade jewerly and handicrafts and -- ChopArt.

Here's the booth with notecards and prints of our son Chapen's art:

Hib minding biz while I snap shots.

And here are a couple of the pets brought by their companions:

Oh, my! What has frightened this trembling little Pom?

Oh, an armpit tall Great Dane.

But don't dispair. You have 19 more weeks to visit, browse, pick up some unique items and gifts and watch some of the most interesting pets in the region.

Every Thursday -- 3 p.m.-7 p.m., 11th and Milwaukee Avenues.

Rain or shine.
