I love to listen to music, on the radio or my favorite CD but the best way to enjoy music is to see a band live. There’s something exciting about watching a band perform live, on stage right in front of you. When you are looking for a fun night out, nothing beats attending a live show. If you read my blog you know how I’m always showcasing local talent, whether it’s a great restaurant, have to go to hair salon or something fun to do in your spare time. I am a big advocate of Local Businesses as well as Local Talent. We have a large amount of unknown musical talent in our area. One of the best bands I’ve seen come on the scene is October Soul. Referred to as the “Modern day’s blues band” October Soul plays an intermixture of rock, blues and country music. October Soul has recently released their debut CD of original songs entitled “Don’t Turn Back” with tracks such as Man on the Edge, Where I've been and Credit Card Blues.
On Saturday, April 30th 2011, October Soul will be heating up the house at Mustang Shelly’s Roadhouse, 8540 West National Avenue New Berlin, WI 53146. I will be attending this Saturdays show along with several friends. We always enjoy the high energy show they perform and know we will have a good time at their show. October Soul has played many venues, from legendary clubs to Summerfest. If you haven’t had the privilege to rock out with the band live, there’s a chance you caught them on the radio show, hosted by Steve Palec “Rock and Roll Roots “on WKLH 96.5 FM in Milwaukee. October Soul also preformed on “Local/Live’ with Midnight Bob on WMSE on 91.7 FM in Milwaukee and on “414 Music “ with Rachel Rose in Radio Milwaukee 88.9 FM. The band has many honors in the relatively short amount of time since October of 2009 when the band first started preforming. In the first year of the bands start, such honors as 2010 Shepherd Express Best Blues Band finalist, 2010 Grafton Blues Challenge finalist and a 2010 WAMI Award finalist for Best Female Vocalist were all presented to the band. Most recently the band October Soul won the Grafton Blues Challenge People's Choice Award for 2011.
The band October Soul consists of 4 musicians that are some of our areas most talented performers. Formed in October 2009, the Soul's all-star line-up consists of multi-award winning vocalist Jamie Brace, Female and Native American (Lac Courte Oreilles), veteran guitarist Joe Barborich, bassist Scott Walters, and drummer/percussionist Steve Campeau. When you get this much talent together the result is a high energy band that goes beyond blues. October Soul plays a set list loaded with a mix of blues, rock and country songs as well as showcasing the bands original work. This band really rocks; you will find yourself singing along, tapping your feet and dancing the night away. I love rock and blues and some of my friends are country music fans. We all can agree on the sound of October Soul being a great band to go and see the show.
When I attended the bands Summerfest show in 2010 at the Potawatomi Stage, the first thing I noticed was how much fun everyone was having. October Soul has such high energy when they are on stage performing. Jamie Brace, the lead singer has such an outgoing personality; you can’t help but catch that contagious smile of hers. Before long people were up dancing and having a great time. If you have never seen them perform live, you are in for great music and entertainment; this is defiantly a show to attend.
Jamie Brace, the front runner of October Soul has a powerful and remarkable voice that fills the air with passion as she pours her unique style and compassion into every song she performs. Her voice has been compared to the great Janis Joplin and Susan Tedeschi. Joe Barborich on lead guitar and vocals, the man in the black hat, is the former lead guitarist for Katz Sass. He has opened for many popular national acts such as Aerosmith, Bryan Lee and Lenny Kravitz . Scott Walters, on Bass Guitar and vocals is the newest member of October Soul. Described as having a slick style and a smooth grove, Scott is a long time veteran on the Milwaukee music scene and played a role in the formation of October Soul in 2009. He’s back where he belongs, rocking the stage. Steve Campeau on drums, percussion and vocals is a self taught, barefoot drummer with over 30 years of experience. Some of the musicians that he has been influenced by are Neil Peart, Dave Weckl, and Simon Phillip.
Saturdays show at Mustang Shelly’s is free of charge, but you must be 21 or over to attend. It’s rare that you get to see talent such as this band, here locally in our own neighborhood without having to dish out a large sum of cash. If you have been to a music or entertainment event recently you know how expensive it can be with the price of your ticket and parking. Saturdays show a Mustang Shellys as the majority of the bands shows, is Free of Charge, with NO cover charge ! October Soul is destined for bigger and better things in their future. I am glad that I was introduced to this band and privileged to enjoy them play here locally. They quickly became a band that I will see whenever I get the chance, and I hope that you too get to enjoy the smoking hot sounds and great show that October Soul has to offer.
